How to spot an affiliate link
Any page containing affiliate links carries a disclosure near the top, before the first link. Outbound commercial links are marked with the rel="sponsored nofollow" attribute, which is the standard search engines use to identify paid links.
Links to other pages on this site, to manufacturer specification sheets, to government standards and to research sources are never affiliate links.
What commission does not buy
- It does not buy a recommendation. We do not select which product to mention based on which pays more. Where the correct answer is a cheaper unit, or no unit at all, that is what the guide says.
- It does not buy coverage. We do not accept payment to write about a product, and we do not publish sponsored posts or manufacturer-supplied copy.
- It does not buy a rating. We do not run “best of” rankings at all, precisely because they are the format most easily distorted by commission rates.
- It does not buy your data. Clicking an affiliate link passes a referral identifier to the retailer so the sale can be attributed. It does not pass anything about you to us beyond aggregate click and sale counts.
Why we use affiliate links at all
Running this site costs money: hosting, keyword and specification data subscriptions, and the time to keep forty guides current as standards and models change. The realistic funding options for an independent site are advertising, sponsorship, subscriptions or affiliate commission.
Sponsorship compromises the content directly. Display advertising degrades the reading experience and rewards page views rather than useful answers. Affiliate commission has its own well-known failure mode — the incentive to push readers toward a purchase — and the way we guard against it is by not building the site around product recommendations in the first place. Most pages here answer a question and send you away satisfied without buying anything.
