Before anything else: check the recall
GE-branded dehumidifiers appear in two separate recall actions, both for units that can overheat and catch fire. If yours is affected, stop using it now — do not troubleshoot it.
Find the nameplate sticker on the back of the unit. It carries the brand, model number and pint capacity. Then check it against both lists below.

The scale here is not trivial. Recall 23-262 covered 1.56 million units and was linked to at least 23 fires. In August 2023 the CPSC issued a separate warning noting that four deaths may be tied to recalled Gree dehumidifiers, across incidents in Ohio, Iowa and Missouri. If your model is on either list, unplug it.

GE’s fault codes — all three of them
Search for GE dehumidifier error codes and you will find long tables listing E5, P2, EH, AS and more. GE does not document any of those. Its support article publishes exactly three codes, and its owner’s manuals list none at all.

If your GE unit is showing something that is not on this list, it is worth checking the nameplate — a good number of “GE” code tables online are borrowed wholesale from other brands. Frigidaire and Midea both publish much longer code sets, and those tables get relabelled.
Fixing E01 and P1
Both mean the pump tried to move water and could not. Work through the hose: is the outlet end higher than the pump is rated to lift, is there a kink, is the far end submerged in what it already pumped out, is there a blockage, has it frozen in an unheated space? Then check the bucket is seated properly and the pickup screen is clear.
The reset — and the only one GE documents
Unplug the unit, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in. That is GE’s documented procedure, and if a code survives it, GE directs you to your model’s manual.
There is no button-combination reset for GE dehumidifiers. Anything you read describing one is not from GE. Note also that GE units remember their settings: “In the case of a power outage or interruption, the unit will automatically restart, in the settings last used, after the power is restored.” So a power cut is not the reason your settings changed.
The four specs that explain most “faults”

To clear the filter light: clean the filter, refit it, then press the Filter Timer pad. The light will not go out on its own.
On frost, GE describes the behaviour rather than branding it auto-defrost: “When frost builds up on the evaporator coils, the compressor will cycle off and the fan will continue to run until the frost disappears.” If yours ices repeatedly, the room is too cold — see why dehumidifiers freeze up.

Frequently asked questions
What does 88 mean on a GE dehumidifier?
Nothing is wrong. GE documents 88 as the normal power-up display, shown until you set a relative humidity level, and states explicitly that it “does not indicate a problem with the appliance.”
How do I reset a GE dehumidifier?
Unplug it, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in. That is the only reset GE publishes — there is no button combination. Give it up to 3 minutes after restarting before the compressor engages.
Is my GE dehumidifier recalled?
Possibly — GE-branded units appear in four separate CPSC recalls between 2011 and 2023, covering models made from 2008 to 2014. Check the model number on the nameplate sticker on the back of the unit against the table above. If it matches, unplug it and stop using it.
Why won’t my GE dehumidifier collect water?
Usually because it has nothing to collect — the room has already reached your set humidity, or it is below 41°F, GE’s stated minimum operating temperature. Set it to continuous for an hour and check the bucket before assuming a fault.
How do I turn off the Clean the Filter light?
Clean the filter, refit it, then press the Filter Timer pad. The light runs on a timer — 250 hours on ADEW30/50/65 models, 500 hours on the APEL70 — so it will not clear itself even with a spotless filter.
