Short answer: the most common reason a dehumidifier stops collecting water is that it has already dried the room to its target humidity and is doing exactly what it should. The second most common is that the room is below about 65°F, where a compressor unit largely stops working.
Genuine faults come further down the list. Before assuming the machine is broken, check the room temperature, the humidity reading, the filter and the humidistat setting — four checks that account for most cases.
A dehumidifier that runs but produces no water is one of the most-reported appliance problems there is, and a large share of those machines are healthy. The fan noise makes it feel like the unit is working hard for nothing, so people assume failure. Below are the nine causes ordered by how often each is the real one, each with a way to confirm it.
The five-minute diagnostic
Work through these in order. Most people find their answer before step four.
- Read the room. Put a hygrometer at roughly waist height, away from the unit, and give it ten minutes. If it reads below about 50% RH, the machine has nothing left to remove.
- Read the temperature. At floor level, near the unit. Below 65°F a compressor dehumidifier struggles; below about 41°F most stop entirely.
- Pull the filter and look at the coil. A white layer of frost or a solid sheet of ice means an icing problem, not a capacity problem.
- Set the humidistat to its lowest setting or continuous. Wait five minutes. If the compressor now starts, the setting was the problem.
- Feel the exhaust. On a working unit the air coming out is noticeably warmer than the air going in, and the coil behind the filter is cold. Fan blowing room-temperature air with a room-temperature coil means the compressor is not cooling.
1. It is working correctly — the room is already dry
This is the single most common answer, and it is worth taking seriously before anything else.
A dehumidifier’s pint rating is measured at fixed test conditions — under the current DOE standard, 65°F and 60% relative humidity. That is a damp room. Once the space is down to 45–50% RH, the same machine might pull a cup or two a day, simply because there is far less water in the air to condense. The machine has not weakened; the air has. Success looks a lot like failure.
How to confirm: measure the room’s relative humidity with a hygrometer, not with the unit’s own display — built-in humidistats are frequently off by five to ten points, and they read the air right at the intake, which is the driest air in the room. If an independent meter reads under 50%, you are done.

Worth knowing: the output of a dehumidifier is not a constant. It falls sharply as the room dries, and it falls sharply as the room cools. A unit that filled a bucket a day in July and produces a cup a day in October is behaving normally in both cases.
2. The room is too cold
Compressor dehumidifiers — effectively all household models — chill a coil below the dew point of the incoming air. In a cold room the coil has to run colder still, which drives it below freezing, and the condensate turns to frost instead of running into the bucket. Performance drops off noticeably below about 65°F, and below roughly 41°F most units either shut down or spend nearly all their time in defrost. This catches people out in unheated basements and garages in spring and fall, when the air is still damp but the space has gone cold.
How to confirm: a thermometer on the floor near the unit, not a reading from a thermostat upstairs. Basement floor-level air is often several degrees colder than the middle of the room.
What to do: either warm the space, or use a machine designed for it. Units marketed for basements and crawl spaces usually list a minimum operating temperature; check for one rated to about 41°F. Below that, a desiccant unit is the right technology — it works down to near freezing, though it uses more electricity and warms the room.
3. The coils are iced over
Ice is the visible version of the previous problem, and it is self-reinforcing: frost blocks airflow, less air over the coil makes the coil colder, and the frost grows into a solid block. A unit in this state runs constantly, produces almost nothing, and eventually just circulates air past a lump of ice.
How to confirm: remove the filter and look directly at the coil. White frost or clear ice is unmistakable. If you find a puddle under the unit after switching it off, that was ice melting.
What to do: switch it off and let it thaw completely — several hours, fan-only if the unit allows it, never a hair dryer or a scraper. 4. The filter is clogged
Every bit of water a dehumidifier collects has to pass over the coil first, and everything that reaches the coil goes through the filter. A filter matted with dust chokes airflow, which cuts water output long before you notice the fan sounding different — and it is a common trigger for icing.
How to confirm: slide the filter out and hold it up to a light. You should see light through it clearly. A gray felt of dust across the mesh is a clogged filter, even if it does not look dramatic.

5. The humidistat is set too high
If the humidistat is set to 60% and the room is sitting at 55%, the unit is satisfied and the compressor will not run. The fan may still cycle on periodically to sample the air, which is exactly what makes people think the machine is running but not collecting.
How to confirm: turn the setting down to its lowest value, or to continuous mode. Wait — most units have a three-minute compressor protection delay after any change, and that delay is itself a frequent source of “it is not doing anything” complaints. 6. Airflow around the unit is blocked
A dehumidifier needs to draw room air in and push dry air back out. Pushed into a corner, backed against a wall, or wedged behind boxes, it recirculates its own exhaust — drying the same small pocket of air over and over while the rest of the room stays damp.
How to confirm: check clearance on every side against the manual, typically 6 to 12 inches and more at the intake. Then hold your hand at the outlet: strong, warm, dry airflow is good; weak airflow points at the filter, the fan or ice.
What to do: move it somewhere central where air can circulate, off carpet if possible, away from walls and furniture. In a partitioned basement, one unit behind a closed door will not treat the rooms beyond it, no matter how big it is.
7. A continuous drain hose is fitted and you did not notice
This one is almost funny when you find it. If a hose is connected to the drain port, the bucket stays empty by design — the water is going into a floor drain, a sump pit or a sink. The machine is collecting several pints a day; you are just not seeing them.
How to confirm: look at the back or side of the unit for a hose spigot. Follow the hose to its outlet and check whether water is emerging. A previous owner, an installer or a household member may have set this up.
What to do: if you want bucket collection back, remove the hose and refit the drain plug. If the hose is fitted but nothing is coming out, check it is not kinked and that it runs downhill for its entire length — a gravity drain that rises anywhere along its run will back up, and the unit will either stop or leak onto the floor.
8. The bucket or float switch is not seated
Nearly every unit has a safety interlock that stops the compressor when the bucket is removed, full, or not pushed fully home. A bucket that is a quarter-inch proud of its seat, or a float that has jammed in the up position, reads as “full” and the machine will not collect.
How to confirm: pull the bucket out, look at the float — usually a foam block on a hinged arm, or a magnet and reed switch — and move it by hand. It should swing freely and fall back. Then slide the bucket firmly back until it clicks or seats flush. If the full indicator is lit with an empty bucket, this is your fault.
What to do: clean any slime off the float and its pivot, check nothing is caught under the bucket, and confirm the bucket is the right way round. 9. Failed compressor or lost refrigerant
This is last because it is genuinely uncommon relative to the other eight, and because it is usually the end of the machine.
How to confirm: with the humidistat at its lowest setting and the room warm and humid, let the unit run for fifteen minutes, then compare the air going in with the air coming out. On a working unit the exhaust is clearly warmer, and the coil behind the filter is cold to the touch. If the fan runs, the coil is at room temperature and the exhaust is not warm, the refrigerant circuit is not doing anything. A compressor that hums for a few seconds and then clicks off is another sign, as is one that never makes any sound at all while the fan runs.
What to do: check the warranty first, because sealed-system faults are normally covered. Outside warranty, this is where most consumer dehumidifiers end. Refrigerant work requires certified handling and the labor cost usually exceeds what the unit is worth. There is no user-serviceable fix and no product you can add to recharge it.

My dehumidifier fan is running but it is not collecting water. What does that mean?
Usually that the compressor is not running while the fan is. That happens for benign reasons — the room has reached the humidistat setting, the unit is in its three-minute restart delay, or it is defrosting — and for one serious reason, a failed compressor. Set the humidistat to its lowest setting, wait five minutes, and feel whether the exhaust air turns warm.
How much water should a dehumidifier collect in a day?
It depends entirely on how damp and how warm the room is, so the number on the box is a ceiling, not an expectation. In a genuinely damp basement in summer you might fill a bucket daily. In the same basement in October at 48% RH, a few ounces is normal and correct. Judge the machine by the room’s humidity reading, not by the water in the bucket.
Why does my dehumidifier collect less water than it used to?
Most often because it worked — the space is drier than it was. Beyond that, the usual causes are a dirty filter, a dirty coil reducing heat transfer, cooler seasonal temperatures, or a unit that has been moved somewhere with worse airflow. A gradual decline over years with no other symptom can also mean a slow refrigerant leak.
Will a dehumidifier work in a cold garage?
A standard compressor unit will do very little below 65°F and effectively nothing below about 41°F. If the garage is unheated, look for a model rated for low-temperature operation with auto-defrost, or use a desiccant dehumidifier, which keeps working near freezing at the cost of higher power draw.
Is it worth repairing a dehumidifier that has stopped collecting water?
Filters, fans, float switches and drain blockages are worth fixing and are often cheap. A sealed-system fault on an out-of-warranty consumer unit generally is not — the repair cost approaches the price of a new machine. Typical lifespan is roughly 5 to 10 years, so factor the unit’s age into the decision.
