Short answer: set a dehumidifier to 45–50% relative humidity in a living space and 50% in a basement. Leave it on that setting rather than on continuous mode, and put it somewhere air can reach it from all sides — not in a corner, not tight against a wall, and not behind furniture.
Setting it to 30% does not make the room drier in any way that matters. It just runs the compressor for hours it did not need to run.
Most dehumidifier complaints are settings and placement problems, not machine problems. A unit that never switches off, one that runs all day and collects almost nothing, one that ices over every night in the basement — all three are usually a working machine being asked to do the wrong thing in the wrong place. What should I set my dehumidifier to?
Pick a target and leave it there. The EPA recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below 60%, ideally in the 30–50% band, and everything on this page works within that range.

Why 30% is not better than 50%
The instinct is that if some drying is good, more is better. It is not, for three reasons.
Everything you are trying to prevent is already prevented at 50%. Mold needs sustained surface moisture and stalls below roughly 60% RH. Dust mites cannot maintain their water balance below about 50% and die back. Musty smells come from microbial growth that stops at the same point. There is nothing waiting at 35% that you did not already get at 50%.
The cost, meanwhile, rises steeply, because every percentage point of drying is harder than the one before — there is less water left in the air to condense out. A unit holding 50% might cycle eight hours a day; told to hold 35% in the same room it can end up running around the clock. For a mid-size unit that is roughly the difference between $21 and $62 a month, and dehumidifier running costs shows the arithmetic. Air that is too dry also has its own costs: cracked wood furniture and flooring, static, dry sinuses. Below 30% you have swapped one problem for another.
Worth knowing: the humidistat built into a dehumidifier reads the air entering the machine, which is the dampest air in the room. It is a control input, not a measurement of the room. If you want to know what your space is actually doing, put a separate hygrometer on the far side of the room and compare.
Continuous mode, auto mode, and when each is right
Auto or humidistat mode is the default and the right choice almost always. You set a target, the unit runs until it reaches it, then the compressor cycles off and the machine waits. This is how you get stable humidity without paying for run time you do not need.
Continuous mode ignores the humidistat completely and runs the compressor whenever the unit has power. There are exactly three situations where it earns its keep:
- Initial dry-down. A basement that has sat at 70% all summer needs a few days of hard running to pull the moisture out of the concrete, drywall, timber and stored contents as well as out of the air. Run continuous for two or three days, then switch to a humidistat setting.
- After a flood or leak. Same logic, more urgency. Materials hold water long after the air reads dry.
- A crawl space unit plumbed to a permanent drain, where the humidistat is remote and unreliable, or where you specifically want the space held as dry as the machine can manage.
Outside those cases, continuous mode in a space that has already dried down is the most expensive mistake on this page: the machine is paying to remove water that is not there, and in a cool room it spends more and more of that time in defrost rather than drying. It also needs a drain hose. Any unit running flat out in a damp space fills a bucket faster than once a day, and a full bucket stops the machine — giving you the electricity bill of continuous operation with the results of an eight-hour day.
Fan speed
Use high fan speed unless the noise is a problem. More air across the coil means more water removed per hour and less chance of the coil icing. Low speed is a comfort setting for a bedroom, not an efficiency setting; it does not save meaningful electricity, and it makes icing more likely in a cool room.
Where to put a dehumidifier
A dehumidifier dries the air that physically reaches it. That single fact explains every placement rule below.
- Central, not tucked away. The middle of the room, or as close as the layout allows, beats a corner every time. Corners have the worst air movement in any room.
- Clearance on all sides. Manuals typically ask for 6 to 12 inches around the unit; give it more at the intake grille than anywhere else. Check yours, because the requirement varies with whether the machine draws air from the back, the side or the top.
- Not against a wall, and not behind furniture. The most common installation mistake. A unit pushed back against drywall recirculates its own dry output and starves its intake, and sofas, shelving and stacked boxes block airflow just as effectively.
- Off carpet where you can. Carpet restricts the bottom intake on some designs. A hard floor or a low platform is better.
- Level. An out-of-level machine drains badly and can drip from the internal pan. This is a frequent cause of water on the floor around a dehumidifier.
- Away from heat sources. Not next to a furnace, water heater, radiator or a dryer. Warm air at the intake gives the humidistat a misleading reading and makes the unit work in the hottest part of the room.
- Near a drain if you are draining continuously. Gravity drain hoses must fall for their entire length. If the unit sits below the drain, you need a condensate pump instead.
Basement placement specifics
Basements are where placement matters most, because they are the coolest, stillest air in the house and usually the largest single space one unit is asked to cover.
Put the unit near the dampest part of the basement — typically the wall where you can smell it, or where the sump pit is — but keep it a foot or more off that wall. Raise it on a shelf, a pallet or a low stand if the floor gets wet after heavy rain; a dehumidifier standing in half an inch of water is an electrical hazard, and standing water is a plumbing problem the machine cannot solve.
If your basement is partitioned into rooms with closed doors, one unit will not treat all of them. Air does not travel through walls. Either leave the interior doors open, run a small fan to move air between spaces, or accept that the closed rooms stay damp. Doors open or closed?
Closed, to everywhere you are not treating. A dehumidifier sized for a 1,000 sq ft basement is not sized for a 1,000 sq ft basement plus the rest of the house plus whatever comes down the stairs. Leaving the basement door open is one of the reasons people conclude their unit is too small when it is not.
Windows closed too, and in summer that includes basement windows: warm humid outdoor air entering a cool basement is the moisture load you are trying to remove, so opening a window to “air it out” in July makes things worse. The exception is doors within the space you are treating — those should be open, so air can circulate to the machine.
How long should I run it, and should it run at night?
Leave it switched on and let the humidistat decide. That is the whole answer for a unit that is correctly sized and correctly set: it will run when the humidity rises and stop when it does not, which in a typical damp basement works out around six to ten hours of compressor time a day in summer.
Running it only in the evening, or only when you remember, lets humidity climb back up in between, so the unit spends its short window fighting from behind. Steady is cheaper than intermittent. Night running is fine and often sensible — in a basement nobody hears it, and on a time-of-use electricity tariff the overnight hours are cheaper. In a bedroom, use the low fan speed and expect it to be audible; a compressor dehumidifier is roughly as loud as a window air conditioner.
The first few days after setup will look alarming: full buckets, constant running, humidity that barely moves. That is normal. You are drying out everything the space is made of, not just the air. Judge the machine after a week.
Winter and cold-room operation
Most households can switch a dehumidifier off from late fall to spring, because cold outdoor air holds very little moisture and indoor humidity falls on its own. If yours is still needed in January, check the setting first — 35–40% is usually right for winter, and a unit still trying to hold 50% may simply be redundant.
Temperature is the real constraint. A compressor dehumidifier struggles below about 65°F and most stop being useful below 41°F, because the coil drops below freezing and condensate turns to ice instead of draining.
