Basements

A basement is the hardest room in the house to keep dry, because it is below grade, surrounded by damp soil, and cooler than the air that flows into it. A dehumidifier fixes humidity, not water: if you have seepage, a failed grade or a cracked foundation, no appliance will keep up. These guides diagnose the moisture source first, then size the unit, sort out drainage, place it correctly and deal with the musty smell that survives everything else.
