On repair: anything outside the sealed refrigerant system is usually worth fixing; anything inside it usually is not. Floats, fans, cords and hoses are cheap. A failed compressor on a consumer unit is the end.

The sizing point is worth dwelling on because it is counterintuitive. An undersized dehumidifier does not simply work harder. It never reaches its setpoint, so it never shuts off, and it accumulates in one summer the run hours a correctly sized unit accumulates in two or three — while costing more to run the whole time. Signs a dehumidifier is near the end
Age alone is not a verdict. These are the symptoms that suggest the sealed system rather than a serviceable part:
- It runs, the fan works, but the coil never gets cold and almost no water arrives. If the filter is clean, the room is warm and humid, and clearance is fine, that points at refrigerant charge or the compressor.
- It hums for a few seconds and trips out. A start capacitor is a repair; a seized compressor is not.
- Oily residue around the coils or tubing. Refrigerant oil escaping with the refrigerant. That is a leak in the sealed system.
- Capacity has fallen off year on year and a full clean of the coil and filter does not restore it.
- It trips the breaker or GFCI, or smells of burning. Stop using it. This is not a DIY repair.
Before concluding any of that, rule out the cheap explanations. A unit that collects no water is very often working correctly in a room that has already reached its target, and a unit that will not start is very often a badly seated bucket, a stuck float or the three-minute compressor delay.

Three things tilt the decision toward replacement even when a repair is technically possible.
Age. Past about eight years, the other components are approaching the end of their lives too, and paying for one repair often buys you a year before the next.
The 2019 rating change. A unit rated before June 2019 was tested at 80°F; today’s test runs at 65°F, so the same machine earns a much lower number on the label. And check the warranty first. Sealed-system coverage is commonly longer than the coverage on the rest of the unit, so the failure most likely to end a machine is also the one most likely to still be covered. Registration or the original receipt is usually required.
How to get ten years instead of five
- Clean the filter every two weeks while the unit is running. Vacuum dry, wash warm, dry completely before refitting.
- Set it to 45–50% and leave it. Lower targets buy nothing and cost run hours.
- Size it properly so it cycles off rather than running continuously.
- Give it clearance on every side, more at the intake.
- Do not run it in a cold room. Below about 65°F a compressor unit spends its time icing and defrosting; below 41°F most stop being useful. Use a desiccant unit instead.
- Clean the coil and drain pan twice a year. This is the step almost everyone skips, and it is what restores lost capacity.
- Store it properly. Drain it, run the fan alone for 24 hours to dry the inside, clean it, cover it loosely and stand it upright somewhere that will not freeze.
