How We Research Dehumidifiers

Plenty of dehumidifier sites claim to have “tested 50+ units in our lab”. Most have not. We would rather tell you exactly what we do and let you judge the advice on its merits.

We do not run a test lab

DehumidifierTips.com does not physically test dehumidifiers. We do not measure pint-per-day extraction in a climate chamber or take decibel readings. If you want that, RTINGS and Consumer Reports both do it properly, and we will point you to them where their data is better than anything we could offer.

What we do instead

Our value is in the reasoning, not the measuring. Specifically:

1. Published capacity data, read correctly

Every dehumidifier sold in the US is rated under a Department of Energy test procedure. Since 2019 that procedure has been run at 65°F rather than 80°F, which is why a unit that would once have been sold as a “70 pint” is now labeled “50 pint” — the machine did not change, the test did. A great deal of bad advice online comes from mixing up pre- and post-2019 ratings. We track which standard a figure comes from and say so.

2. Manufacturer specifications and documentation

We read the actual spec sheets, installation manuals and warranty terms — not the marketing page. Operating temperature range, drain options, filter type, defrost method and coil coating matter far more for a crawl space or a cold basement than the headline pint number, and they are usually buried in a PDF.

3. Energy Star and efficiency data

Integrated Energy Factor (IEF, in liters per kWh) is the number that determines what a unit costs you to run. We use the published figures rather than guessing from wattage alone.

4. Patterns in verified owner reviews

Individual reviews are noise. Patterns are signal. When several hundred owners of the same model report the same compressor failure at month 14, that tells you something no single lab test would. We look for repeated, specific, mechanical complaints — and we discount star ratings, which are dominated by delivery experience.

5. Building science, not folklore

Where moisture questions have a physical answer — dew point, vapor drive, why a vented crawl space in a humid climate gets wetter in summer — we work from established building-science sources such as the EPA, ASHRAE and the Building Science Corporation rather than repeating what other blogs say.

What this means for our recommendations

We are good at telling you what kind of dehumidifier your situation needs, what capacity, which features are non-negotiable, and which common recommendations are wrong for your case. We are less able than a test lab to tell you which of two similar 50-pint units is quieter. Where that distinction matters, we say which source to trust.
