Short answer: a dehumidifier removes water from air. An air purifier removes particles from air. They are not alternatives to each other, and neither does the other’s job at all.

What each machine actually does

An air purifier draws room air through a filter, usually a HEPA filter, which traps particles — dust, pollen, dander, mold spores, smoke particulate — and often a carbon stage that adsorbs some odor molecules and gases. It changes what is suspended in the air. It does not change how much water the air contains.
That distinction decides everything else.

Which one do you need for mold?
This is the search behind most visits to this page, so here is the answer without hedging: if you can only buy one machine for a mold problem, buy the dehumidifier.
Mold needs sustained moisture. Below roughly 60% relative humidity, growth on susceptible surfaces stalls; the practical target is 30–50%. A dehumidifier is the only one of these two machines that changes that number. An air purifier can run 24 hours a day in a 75% RH basement and the mold on the wall behind it will keep growing, because you have removed some spores from the air without touching the conditions that produced them.
What an air purifier genuinely contributes is capture of spores that are already airborne. Mold spores are large enough for a HEPA filter to trap, so a purifier can reduce what you breathe in a room where growth exists. That is symptom management. It is worth having if someone in the house reacts badly, but it is not a fix.

The dust mite point deserves emphasis because it is under-appreciated. Dust mites are one of the most common indoor allergens in US homes, they live in bedding and upholstery, and they are directly controlled by humidity. Holding a bedroom below 50% RH is a real intervention against them — and no air purifier reduces the mite population, because the allergen is in the fabric rather than floating in the air until you disturb it.
If someone in the house has asthma or is immune compromised and there is visible mold or a persistent damp problem, treat that as a reason to get the moisture assessed properly rather than to buy an appliance.
What a dehumidifier’s filter is actually for
A common and understandable misconception: people see the washable filter on the front of a dehumidifier and assume the machine is also cleaning the air. It is not.
That filter exists to stop dust, lint and pet hair reaching the evaporator coil. A coil matted with dust loses airflow and heat transfer, extracts less water, and eventually ices over. The filter is protecting the machine, not your lungs. It is a coarse mesh screen, nothing like HEPA media, and it captures almost nothing at the particle sizes that matter for allergies.

Why 2-in-1 units usually disappoint
Units that claim to dehumidify and purify in one box exist. They tend to compromise both jobs, for a structural reason: the two functions want opposite things from the airflow path.
Effective dehumidification wants a lot of air moved across a cold coil with as little resistance as possible. Effective HEPA filtration wants air forced through dense filter media, which is inherently high resistance. Put a true HEPA filter in front of a dehumidifier’s intake and you cut its airflow and its extraction rate; use a filter loose enough not to hurt airflow and you are not really purifying.
The result is usually a dehumidifier with a slightly better-than-usual dust screen, sold at a premium. If you need both functions properly, two machines will do each job better, and you can put the purifier where people sleep and the dehumidifier where the damp is — which is rarely the same room anyway.
If you are buying one, buy in this order
- Measure the humidity first. A basic hygrometer settles the whole question. Above 60% RH, you have a moisture problem and the dehumidifier is the answer. Between 30% and 50%, humidity is not your issue and a purifier is the more plausible purchase.
- Fix sources before buying either. An unvented dryer, a bathroom fan that does not work, a downspout discharging at the foundation — those defeat both machines. So does a house full of cardboard in a damp basement.
- Dehumidifier first if the problem is damp, smell or mold. It treats the cause and the smells go with it.
- Purifier first if the problem is pollen, pets or smoke, and put it in the bedroom, where people spend eight uninterrupted hours.
- Both, in different rooms, if you have a damp basement and a pollen-sensitive sleeper. This is a common and entirely sensible setup.
