Short answer: unplug the unit, then clean four things in this order — the filter, the evaporator coil, the drain pan and outlet, and the bucket and float. Wash the filter in warm water with a little dish detergent and let it dry completely before it goes back in. Clean the coil with a soft brush and a weak detergent solution, working along the fins and never across them.
Budget about an hour, most of it drying time. Do the filter every two weeks in season, the bucket weekly, and the coil and drain pan twice a year.
Cleaning a dehumidifier is not complicated, but almost everyone does a partial job. They empty the bucket, rinse the filter and stop — which leaves the evaporator coil, the part that is permanently wet and permanently dirty, untouched. That is why the machine smells again a week later and why airflow keeps dropping year after year. Before you start: unplug it, and why that matters
Pull the plug out of the wall. Not the power button, not standby — the plug.
You are about to introduce liquid to a machine that contains a mains-powered fan motor, a compressor, and in many units a heater element for the defrost cycle. A dehumidifier’s internal drain pan sits directly under a coil and directly above the base, where the wiring runs. Water finding a live terminal is a genuine shock and short-circuit risk, not a theoretical one. There is also a mechanical reason: a fan that starts unexpectedly while your fingers or a brush are near the blades will hurt.
Give the unit a few minutes after unplugging before you open anything. If it has been running, the coil is cold and the compressor is hot, and condensation will be dripping off the fins for a while.

- A vacuum with a soft brush attachment
- Warm water and a few drops of dish detergent
- White vinegar, for the plastic parts only
- A spray bottle
- A soft-bristled brush — an old toothbrush or a paintbrush works
- Microfiber cloths

Work outdoors, in a garage, or over a drop cloth. The dust that comes off a coil that has run for a season is considerable, and some of it is mold.
Step 1: the filter
The filter is the easiest part and the one most worth doing often. On nearly all portable units it slides out of the rear intake grille; on some it clips into the grille itself, which lifts off first. Check your manual if it does not come away with light pressure — a few models hide the filter behind a side panel.
- Vacuum it dry first. Take the loose dust off with the brush attachment before any water touches it. Wetting a heavily loaded filter first turns the dust into paste that then has to be worked out of the mesh.
- Wash it in warm water with a few drops of dish detergent. Work it gently with your fingers or a soft brush. Do not use hot water on a plastic mesh frame — it can warp.
- Rinse until the water runs clear. Detergent left in the mesh attracts dust faster once it is back in the machine.
- Dry it completely. Several hours, ideally overnight, laid flat and out of direct sunlight. This is the step people skip and it is the most consequential one on the page.
A damp filter refitted into a dark, humid machine is a growth medium with air blowing through it. It is the single most common reason a dehumidifier starts smelling musty again within days of being cleaned. Foam holds far more water than it looks like it does; if you can feel any coolness when you press it to your cheek, it is not dry.
Not every filter is washable. Thin foam and plastic mesh filters are. A pleated paper or fabric filter, or a carbon panel, is disposable — vacuum it gently and replace it on the manufacturer’s schedule rather than washing it. If a washable filter is torn, permanently gray after washing, or has lost its stiffness, replace it. Filters are inexpensive; a coil clogged because the filter stopped filtering is not.
Worth knowing: a dehumidifier’s filter exists to protect the coil, not to clean your air. It is a coarse dust screen, not a HEPA element. Judging it by how much it improves the air in the room is the wrong test — judge it by whether the coil behind it is staying clean.
Step 2: the evaporator coil
This is the step that separates a real clean from a token one. With the filter out you should be able to see a finned block behind the intake grille. That is the evaporator: room air passes over it, water condenses on it, and everything airborne that got past the filter sticks to it. There is a second coil behind it, the condenser, which runs warm and stays much cleaner.
Some units expose enough of the evaporator through the grille to clean it in place. Others need the front or rear grille unclipped or unscrewed. Consult the manual before removing panels, and do not force plastic clips on a machine that has been in a cold basement — they get brittle.
Vacuum first, along the fins
Use the soft brush attachment and move it in the same direction the fins run, which on almost all units is vertical. Never drag a brush or nozzle across the fins. Aluminum fins are about as thick as heavy foil and they fold at the slightest sideways pressure. Bent fins block airflow permanently, and blocked airflow is a direct cause of the unit icing over.
Then wash it
Mix warm water with a few drops of dish detergent in a spray bottle. Mist the face of the coil until it is wet but not running, and leave it two or three minutes so it can lift the film. Then work along the fins with the soft brush, top to bottom, in the direction of the fins.
Rinse sparingly with clean water in a second spray bottle, letting the runoff fall into the drain pan below, where it is meant to go. Do not pour water into the machine and do not aim water into the fan housing or the electrical compartment on the side.
Coil cleaner versus detergent
Detergent handles a normal season’s accumulation. If the coil is greasy — common in a kitchen or a workshop — or if the biofilm is thick enough to see, a purpose-made evaporator coil cleaner from an HVAC supply house does a better job. Check two things on the label: that it is intended for evaporator coils rather than outdoor condensers, which take far more aggressive chemistry, and whether it is no-rinse or rinse-required. Ventilate the space and wear gloves.
Straightening bent fins
A fin comb has several sets of teeth at different fin spacings. Pick the set that matches your coil, hook it into an undamaged section, and draw it gently through the flattened area in the direction of the fins. Do not comb an entire coil — straighten the obviously crushed patches and leave the rest alone.
Step 3: the drain pan, outlet and hose
Under the coil is a sloped tray that catches condensate and routes it either to the bucket or out through the continuous drain port. It is a wet plastic channel that collects lint, dust and slime, and a partly blocked one both smells and causes the unit to leak water onto the floor.
- Wipe the pan out with a cloth and detergent solution. Get into the corners and the low end where the outlet is.
- Check the drain outlet itself. A cotton swab or a pipe cleaner clears the usual plug of lint. Then flush it with a little clean water and watch that it runs freely.
- If a continuous drain hose is fitted, take it off and flush it through with warm detergent solution, then rinse. Hoses grow their own biofilm, and a clear vinyl hose that has gone green on the inside needs replacing rather than cleaning.
- Look at the rubber drain plug or cap while you are there. If you are running to the bucket, it should be seated; if you are running a hose, it should be out. Both mistakes are common and both cause leaks.
Step 4: the bucket and float
The bucket is the part everyone cleans, so keep it in proportion — it is a real reservoir, but it is not usually the main one.
- Wash it with warm water and dish detergent, using a soft brush on the corners, the handle recess and the underside of the float.
- Rinse, then wipe it out with white vinegar diluted about one part to three parts water. Leave it a few minutes, then rinse again. Vinegar deals with the mineral film and the residual odor that detergent leaves behind.
- Dry it fully before it goes back in.
While the bucket is out, check the float mechanism. On most units it is either a foam or plastic float on an arm, or a float that rides on a post and trips a reed switch. It should move up and down freely with no stiffness and no grit. A sticky float is a very common cause of a unit that reports a full bucket when the bucket is empty, or of a machine that refuses to start at all. Wipe the switch area, do not lubricate it, and make sure the bucket seats fully home when you slide it back — most units will not run at all if it is a quarter inch proud.
Step 5: the grilles and the outside
Vacuum both grilles, intake and exhaust, with the brush attachment. The exhaust side accumulates less but does clog, particularly in a workshop or a room with pets. Wipe the housing down with a damp cloth and a little detergent, then dry it. Do not spray cleaner directly at the control panel — spray the cloth instead. If the unit has castors, check they still roll rather than drag.
Finishing up and running it dry
Refit the filter only once it is genuinely dry. Put the bucket back, seat it properly, plug the unit in, and run it on the highest fan setting with the humidity target at its lowest for two or three hours in a ventilated space. That dries the coil, clears the last of the loosened material out of the machine, and lets you confirm airflow feels stronger than it did before you started.

What not to do
A short list, but each of these ends machines.
- Do not use bleach on the coil. Sodium hypochlorite corrodes aluminum fins and copper tubing, and you cannot rinse it out of a coil properly, so it keeps working on the metal after you have finished. Detergent or a proper coil cleaner only.
- Never mix bleach with vinegar, or with any ammonia-based cleaner. The combination releases toxic gas. Pick one product and stick to it for the whole job.
- Do not hose it down or use a pressure washer. It is an appliance full of electronics and a motor, not a car radiator. Pressure also folds fins flat instantly.
- Do not scrub across the fins with anything — brush, cloth or vacuum nozzle. Always along them.
- Do not run it with the filter out “just until the filter dries”. Unfiltered air loads the coil directly, and undoing that takes an hour with a brush.
- Do not put a wet filter back in because you want the unit running tonight. Wait.
- Do not open the sealed refrigerant system. The tubing and the compressor are not user-serviceable, and there is nothing in there for you to clean.
