Do Dehumidifiers Cool a Room? No — and Here Is Why

No. A dehumidifier warms the room it runs in, usually by 2 to 5°F over several hours in a closed space. Every watt it draws ends up as heat in that room, and condensing water releases more heat on top of that.

But people who ask this question are usually not asking about the thermometer. They are asking why the room feels better with one running. It does, and the reason is worth understanding, because it decides whether you need a dehumidifier or an air conditioner.

Why it heats instead of cools

A refrigerant dehumidifier is a closed loop inside one box. It pulls room air over a cold coil, water condenses out, and the now-dry air passes over a hot coil on the way back into the room. The cold coil and the hot coil are two ends of the same refrigerant circuit, so the heat removed at one end is dumped straight back at the other. Nothing leaves the room.

Then two more heat sources get added on top:

  • The compressor and fan. A 50 pint unit draws roughly 500 watts. All of it becomes heat in the room, the same as a 500 watt heater.
  • Latent heat of condensation. Turning water vapour back into liquid releases about 970 BTU per pound of water. A unit pulling 30 pints a day is releasing roughly 30,000 BTU of that heat into the room over 24 hours.

An air conditioner does the identical trick with one crucial difference: its hot coil is outside the building. That is the entire distinction. So why does the room feel cooler?

Your body does not measure air temperature. It measures how fast it is losing heat, and a large part of that is sweat evaporating from your skin. Evaporation only happens if the surrounding air has capacity to take the moisture — and at high humidity it does not.

Drop the humidity and evaporative cooling restarts. The effect is large enough to outweigh the couple of degrees the machine added:

That is the honest answer to the question. The thermometer goes up a little; how the room feels improves a lot. Whether that is a good trade depends entirely on why the room is uncomfortable.

How much does it actually warm the room?

It depends on the size of the space and how much air it exchanges with the rest of the house. Rough expectations for a mid-size unit running continuously:

In a basement the warming is a genuine bonus: it raises surface temperatures slightly, which pushes them further from the dew point and reduces condensation on cold walls and pipes. In a bedroom in August it is a nuisance.

Getting the benefit without the heat

  • Run it when you are not in the room. Humidity comes down and stays down for hours; the heat dissipates. Running a bedroom dehumidifier during the day and switching it off at bedtime works well.

  • Put it in an adjacent space. A hallway or landing unit will dry the bedrooms through open doors without heating the room you sleep in.
  • Add a fan. Moving air over skin restores evaporative cooling directly and costs about 40 watts.

Common questions

Do desiccant dehumidifiers heat the room more?

Yes, noticeably. A desiccant unit uses a heater to drive moisture off its rotor, so it can raise a small room by 10°F or more. That makes them excellent in an unheated garage in winter and a poor choice for a bedroom in summer.

Does a dehumidifier make a room feel less stuffy?

Usually yes, because “stuffy” is mostly humidity plus still air. It does not add fresh air, though. If the room also smells stale or you are getting headaches, you need ventilation, not moisture removal.

Is it cheaper to run than an air conditioner?

Will running both together help?

Rarely worth it in one room. The AC is already removing moisture, and the dehumidifier is adding heat the AC then has to remove again — you pay twice. The exception is a large house where the AC handles the living space and a dehumidifier handles a basement the AC does not reach.
